Who is the Acro Guitarist? I am Lilia Bogoeva, a Los Angeles based performer. I became The Acro Guitarist because all those other things I tried didn’t let me be truly myself. Powerful acrobatics plus metal guitar and a harsh, abrasive vocal style equals ownership of an art form that sums up everything I am and puts it in the public eye. I needed to invent my own “job field” and carve my own place in the world to feel confident in the person I am. I often play with my band Karkaza.
What are your musical influences? My playing is most influenced by heavy metal and classic rock- mostly the classy heavy metal scene, thrash, melodic/technical death metal, some of the “groove-driven” stuff like Pantera and Sepultura, and some of the darker, heavier “math metal” stuff like Meshuggah. But I have found at least some inspiration in every genre I’ve played. A few years ago when I first started learning classical music theory in detail, I integrated the common practices of classical theory to a very large extent in all of my music. But towards the end of the CalArts era, I started veering away from theory-driven composition and reverted to a more “play by feel” approach, one that states, “yes, I know the rules, that’s why I’m going to break them.”
